Liquid Cooling Garment (LCG)

Apollo Extravehicular Mobility Unit Internal System
Original - 1968

Function: Most long underwear keeps people warm. This underwear keeps astronauts cool. Worn next to the skin, under a special pressure suit, the LCG supplied a continuous flow of temperature-controlled water through a network of tubing stitched inside the mesh of the suit. The flow of water prevented the astronaut from overheating in the 253°F daytime temperatures on the surface of the Moon. Garments like this are still used as part of space suits today.
